How Turmeric can Help Fight with Infections in this Period of COVID-19

Today, I want to discuss how turmeric, an Indian spice can help fight with infections. As we know that the COVID-19 outbreak has caused panic and chaos among doctors, researchers, and the general public across the world. In this current scenario, apart from some precautions such as washing hands, social distancing, etc., people are also looking into ways to boost the immune system to stay away from common symptoms of coronavirus disease or infection as until now, there is no cure for the disease.

Vaccines are yet to come and there are no drugs known to treat the novel coronavirus except a few that have been taken into consideration for showing some positive results. Therefore, during coronavirus, we can use simple tricks to boost our immune system that might help reduce the severity of the disease.

Turmeric is a natural herb and one of the most popular Indian spices. It is well known for its benefits to fight with infections. We have been using this spice in several Indian recipes for ages without realizing its amazing benefits.

Medicinal Properties of Turmeric and Its Possible Mechanism of Actions: Below we have simply described some of the properties of turmeric and its possible mechanism of action against various infections:

  • One of the active ingredients in turmeric is Curcumin (3-5%) that aids in boosting immunity. This is the reason, turmeric is also known as Curcumin.

  • Curcumin has anti-infective and antioxidant properties. It can help fight against infections.

  • Researchers found turmeric to be helpful in various inflammatory conditions including arthritis or joint pain, heart diseases, and others. The spice is also beneficial in respiratory problems and depression

  • According to a research study published in the journal of Frontiers in Microbiology, 2019, curcumin’s antiviral and antibacterial activity helps fight against various human pathogens, bacteria, viruses, and fungi.

Most importantly, turmeric can be used to increase the immunity of your family members against cold, cough, and flu viruses.

Simple Tips for Using Turmeric: You can use turmeric in the following ways:

  • Make a Turmeric shot – Take a glass of lukewarm water, mix a pinch of turmeric powder, a little honey and ginger to the drink, and consume in a 2 oz (one-shot) or larger quantity.

  • Prepare Turmeric Milk – Take half a cup of warm milk and mix a pinch of turmeric powder into it. If you are preparing this for a small child you can add a little sugar to enhance its taste. This is the best cold-busting remedy for your kids. I use it at my home in almost every season, or whenever required.

  • Make Turmeric Tea – Take a cup of water, add 1 teaspoon of turmeric, a pinch of black pepper, and a little ginger. Pour the tea into a cup and mix in half a teaspoon of honey. You can also squeeze a little lemon juice into this turmeric tea.

  • Consume Raw - Otherwise, you can simply take ½ a teaspoon of turmeric powder and drink water afterward.

Note: Reduce the quantity of turmeric powder to 1/3rd in your recipe, if preparing for children (below 12 years of age).
