Top 3 Habits That Damage Your Immunity

Hello everyone!

Welcome to my blog HealthyWealthy!

Today, I want to discuss the top three habits that might damage our immunity! As we all know that we have a natural immune system in the body that helps us fight with any disease or infection. The immune system comprises immune cells of different types performing various immune functions in the body. People who have a healthy immune system have stronger immunity compared to the people with a weaker immune system against infections. This is the reason, we found some people falling sick repeatedly due to a weaker immune system while other people with a stronger immune system do not fall sick easily. So, it is very important to take care of our immune system.

When an infectious particle/bacteria/virus enters a human body, our body’s immune cells immediately start their defense mechanism and ultimately destroy that disease-causing organism. Therefore, our immune system’s health should never be neglected. In my previous blog, I had discussed some of the natural ingredients and simple ways they can be used to boost our immunity. This blog is mainly focused on some of the habits that might be harmful to our immune system’s health. Below are the three most common habits that we should be aware of as they might be weakening our immunity against common infections like cold or cough:

1. Poor Sleep: The inability to sleep properly or for a required period of at least 6 to 8 hours might cause damage to our health and most importantly to our immune system. Therefore, people who take inadequate sleep are more susceptible to get sick. Poor sleep can decrease our “body's ability to respond to colds or bacterial infections.” Although more sleep won't necessarily prevent ourselves from getting sick, “skimping on it could adversely affect our immune system.”

2. Excess Sugar: Eating too much sugar might suppress the immune system functioning leaving our body more susceptible to bacterial or viral infection. Consuming excessive sugar or white carbs might disturb our body's nutrient balance leading to inflammation and metabolic disruption in the body. Therefore, in order to keep our immune system healthy, we should keep track of the amount of sugar we take in a day. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), “men should consume no more than 9 teaspoons (36 grams or 150 calories) of added sugar per day.” For women, AHA, recommended a lower amount, 6 teaspoons (25 grams or 100 calories) per day.

3. Stress: Too much stress or anxiety is also associated with a weaker immunity against diseases. Taking too much stress negatively affects our immune system's ability to fight with harmful organisms. During stress, our body releases the stress hormone corticosteroid that can suppress the effectiveness of our immune system. This makes our bodies more susceptible to infections.

Apart from the above, excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, consuming too much caffeine, junk food, and inadequate water intake are some other bad habits that can negatively affect our immune system leaving our body susceptible to infection. So, we all should take great care of our immune system’s health. This is our primary responsibility, especially in this corona period to keep control of our habits that might damage the immune system, and also, we should try to include some natural immunity boosters in our daily routine.
